Easily Monitor Business-Critical Applications
Application Performance Monitoring is included in WhatsUp® Gold’s Total and Total Plus editions. It is also available as an add-on to our Standard, Premium, MSP and Distributed editions.
Monitor Commercial Applications
Turnkey application profiles let you easily monitor availability performance of Linux systems, Apache web servers (Linux or Microsoft based), popular Microsoft applications such as Exchange, SharePoint®, Dynamics, Lync®, SQL Server®, DNS, Internet Information Services (IIS), Active Directory®, and Hyper-V®. All profiles follow Microsoft’s monitoring best-practices specifying how the application should be monitored and what actions you can take when the application or a monitored component changes state. You can even customize our certified application profiles with a one click copy and edit function.
Monitor In-House Applications
Quickly generate custom application profiles and modify existing profiles to meet your specific monitoring needs with an intuitive profile development utility. WhatsUp Gold discovers and presents a menu of all services and processes available on a target server. To monitor detailed performance metrics, our MIB browser provides access to thousands of SNMP objects and the WMI library that contains thousands of Windows® performance metrics.
Monitor End-User Performance & SLA Compliance
Deliver the performance demanded by your users and meet the SLAs imposed by your business owners. Receive early warning when users are experiencing poor response times. Measure end-to-end response times using Ipswitch iMacros and iDrone software extensions to create monitoring scripts to run anywhere in your network.
Advanced State Monitoring
Control the definition and monitoring of application states and how SLAs are calculated to eliminates false indictments on SLA failures. Configure multiple application states – up, warning, down, maintenance, and unknown and set threshold values for each. For example, set a warning state threshold at 80 percent utilization and a separate down state at 90 percent so you can proactively respond to performance problems. Define critical and non-critical application components to distinguish between component whose down states should or should not impact SLAs. Define, monitor and get alerts on component and application-level dependencies such as IIS as a monitored component of SharePoint.
Action Policies and Alerting
When a monitored component or application changes its state, you can create multi-step Action Policies. Action Policies can include issuing alerts via text or email, capturing events to a log file, or self-healing actions such as re-starting an application service or initiating a PowerShell script. For example, when an application goes into a down state, you can specify an action path that immediately writes a log entry, kicks off an action script to reboot the system five minutes later, and sends an email notification ten minutes after that. You can define attributes to easily keep track of important configuration and settings information about your applications and systems. Take advantage of powerful percent variables in your action policies and component configurations, such as passing key information about your applications in email alert notification. You can also define blackout policies for alerts and actions. For example, you can create an application specific blackout policy that suspends alerting on weekdays between 9 PM and 6 AM.
Leverage an Application Performance Monitoring Dashboard designed to help quickly identify the root cause of problems and identify trends that can affect future performance.
- Assess the health of all applications with the Current Status Dashboard, then select an application for drill-down analysis.
- Leverage Historical Status Reports to drill down and analyze application performance problems over a period of time and identify difficult-to- diagnose, intermittent performance problems such as memory leaks and URI cache failures.
- Diagnose chronic problems with our Component Summary Dashboard that details all monitored components for an application, including the percentage of time spent in different states.
- The State Change Log keeps a running tally of all state changes at the application and component level to anticipate potential problems.
Monitor Network Traffic and Bandwidth Usage
WhatsUp Gold makes it easy to get detailed visibility into your network traffic to see which users, applications, and protocols are consuming bandwidth. This insight allows you to setup bandwidth usage policies, maximize your return on ISP costs and ensure adequate bandwidth for critical business applications and services.
Need Network Traffic Monitoring?
Here’s How WhatsUp Gold Can Help
Network Traffic Visibility
Having insight to application bandwidth consumption allows you to better manage the performance of your overall infrastructure, applications and services. You can identify bottlenecks and plan effective workarounds or justify a needed bandwidth upgrade.
Bandwidth Capacity Planning
Being able to see historical bandwidth usage trends allows you to stay ahead of capacity planning. Having the visibility to which applications are driving consumption allows you to demonstrate effective bandwidth management and more easily justify upgrades.
Knowing what traffic was consuming bandwidth during a slow-down can really accelerate your troubleshooting. It helps you identify bottleneck issues like bandwidth hogs running where and when they shouldn’t be. Finding these quickly can make you a network superhero.
What Problems Can Traffic Monitoring Solve?
Here’s just a few wins you can get:
- Find backups or file transfers running during peak load periods
- Track unauthorized, bandwidth hogs like streaming or gaming
- Reprioritized authorized activities that consume a disproportionate share of bandwidth.
What Protocols Does WhatsUp Gold Support?
The Network Traffic Analysis module collects network traffic and bandwidth usage data from any flow-enabled device on the network. It supports Cisco’s NetFlow and NetFlow-Lite as well as NSEL protocols, J-Flow, sFlow and IPFIX. Collect and view data for Cisco CBQoS (Class Based Quality of Service) and NBAR (Network Based Application Recognition).
What Reports Are Included?
Out-of-the-box reports include:
- Senders, receivers and conversations
- Sender and receiver domains
- Sender and receiver countries
- Applications and protocols
- Incoming and outgoing interface traffic
- Incoming and outgoing interface utilization
- Bandwidth usage by host and group
Can I Get Traffic Alerts?
Receive threshold-based alerts to help you address network traffic problems before they impact your users, applications, and business. Get alerts when senders or receivers exceed bandwidth thresholds, when interface traffic exceeds utilization thresholds or when you exceed failed connections or the number of conversation partner thresholds.
Can it Help Me Save Money?
Monthly ISP bandwidth charges are expensive. WhatsUp Gold’s Network Traffic Analysis lets you drill down to identify the sources and destinations of your internet traffic, the applications consuming internet bandwidth and the users of those applications. In this way, you can manage and justify ISP costs and ensure that your business critical web applications are getting the bandwidth they need.
How About Quality of Service?
The NBAR (Network Based Application Recognition) Top Applications report displays the network traffic resulting from the top applications according to Cisco’s NBAR classification engine. The CBQoS reports provide information about the effectiveness of class-based policies.
Automated Configuration and Change Management
The Total Plus edition of WhatsUp Gold provide network admins with powerful capabilities to manage network device configurations and change control processes. Configuration Management is also available to existing customers as an add-on to WhatsUp Gold.
Archive and Restore Network Configurations
WhatsUp Golds Configuration Management feature provides central archiving of network configurations in a secure encrypted repository. Network admins can store multiple configurations for each device, including start-up and running configurations. New devices added to the network, can be simply deployed with a download of an archived configuration. If there is a problem, the device can be restored to a known good configuration, minimizing downtime. In both cases, this saves considerable time versus building configurations from scratch. WhatsUp Gold supports bulk configuration changes for multiple devices. For example, many IT organizations mandate monthly password changes to secure their network. A bulk change feature automates this process, rather than changing passwords one device at a time. Bulk changes and other tasks can be scheduled to run automatically.
Alert on Configuration Changes
Network admins need to account for every network configuration change, approved or not. Configuration Management alerts on any changes it detects each time it scans its configuration database. Scans can be scheduled to run automatically to shorten the window between when a change is made and when an alert is issued. In addition, WhatsUp Gold can also alert on configuration changes using SNMP traps. Alerts are integrated into the Alert Center.
Audit and Report on Network Configurations
Configuration Management can be scheduled to run regular audits on network devices to prove compliance with archived configurations. Most organizations also contend with regulatory standards like SOX, PCI, HIPAA and FISMA. They are subject to annual audits which can be costly and disruptive to IT operations. It automates the management of configuration compliance for these regulatory mandates with out-of-the-box configuration templates. Policy audits and audit trail reports provide documented proof of compliance, as well as identify any problem areas. As a result, you improve the efficiency of internal and external audit processes – with less time and money, no disruption, and higher probability of a successful audit. When authorized changes to network configurations are made, Network admins need to validate them. When unauthorized changes are made, Network admins need to find them – quickly. Configuration Management simplifies these processes by generating reports comparing running to archived configurations and identifying the specific changes. With WhatsUp Gold’s Configuration Management, network admins can automate configuration and change management to eliminate common and repetitive configuration tasks, to ensure networks are running authorized configurations, to secure the network, and to comply with regulatory standards.
Map Your Virtual Infrastructure
Automatically generate dynamic maps of your Hyper-V and VMware infrastructure, displaying hosts and guests, host/guest relationships, clusters, and real-time status. With a single click, drill down to view performance data on any virtual resource on the map.
Monitor Your Virtual Infrastructure
Monitor VMware and Hyper-V in real-time to keep an up-to-date list of all hosts and attributes. Monitor the performance and resource consumption of hosts and guests, including CPU, Memory, Disk and Interface Utilization and the availability and performance of servers and tracks live migrations. While Virtualization Monitoring is automatically set to poll every minute, system admins can customize their polling cycles to meet their specific needs. An event log provides a record of events generated from virtual devices.
Alert on Your Virtual Infrastructure
Generate threshold-based alerts on CPU, memory, disk and interface utilization on virtual machines and events including virtual machine status, security related events and any alert generating an event log. Alerts are sent via Email, SMS or log files and integrated into the WhatsUp Gold Alert Center – a single source for managing alerts across your entire IT environment.
Report on Your Virtual Infrastructure
Out-of-the-box reports include:
- Virtual Hosts (all hosts discovered on the network)
- Virtual Server Attributes (VIM and API versions, number of CPU cores, packages and threads; virtual machines, powered on and off, and suspended)
- Virtual Machine Current CPU, Memory, Disk and Interface Utilization reports.
Virtualization reports can be integrated into customized end-to-end dashboards of the entire IT infrastructure. IT staff can create a single dashboard view of their wired and wireless network, physical and virtual servers, and applications to quickly assess the health of their entire IT infrastructure and to identify and fix problems before they impact user, applications or the business.
More Visibility to Cloud Environments
WhatsUp Gold automatically discovers, maps and monitors cloud environments including Amazon Web Services and Azure servers. You can monitor availability of these resources based on an algorithm that factors in multiple characteristics including load balancers, virtual servers and environments, and ping (among others). This extends WhatsUp Gold’s proven network monitoring functionality to the hybrid cloud and beyond the premises to ensure consistent traffic across all systems.
More Visibility to Remote Networks
The Distributed monitoring feature extends the capabilities of WhatsUp Gold to multiple remote networks, allowing a central installation and one or more remote installations. A single instance of WhatsUp Gold is determined to be either the central site or a remote site in a distributed environment based solely on the license used during installation. The central site installation coordinates data feeds from remote site installations and the network data collected from remote sites can be viewed in WhatsUp Gold reports on the central site. Together, the central and remote installations provide high visibility to multiple networks from one location.
Note that each separate central and remote server will require separate WhatsUp Gold license. Please Contact Sales for details.
The Central WhatsUp Gold server and each additional Remote server require their own WhatsUp Gold license. At installation, each server must be configured as either Central or Remote (although this can be changed any time) thus creating a distributed network. Note that while WhatsUp Gold provides a common platform for monitoring this distributed network, the Central and Remote servers need not be running the same edition or license point tier. Therefore, it is possible to create a distributed network consisting of a Central server running a 500-point Total Plus license, a remote server running a 300-point Total license and another remote server running a 100-point Pro license. Note that points cannot be shared across servers.
Reduce Network Monitoring Downtime
Automatically switch WhatsUp Gold from a primary installation to a standby system when the primary system is not functioning normally. The WhatsUp Gold Failover Manager reduces costly downtime by automatically taking action in the event of a primary system failure. This capability can also be initiated by a network administrator manually for planned outages/maintenance.
Note that both the primary and failover servers will require separate WhatsUp Gold licenses. Please Contact Sales for details.
The Failover Manager utilizes user-configurable criteria to determine a failed state. You can choose to have the primary system go down if all services are disabled, or if any specified service is disabled. For example, if you select all services, the services used by WhatsUp Gold must go down on the primary service for the secondary system to take over. If you select only the Polling Engine and Web Server, and both are disabled on the primary system for any reason, the secondary system takes over WhatsUp Gold network management duties until the primary system is restored.
Discover, Map and Monitor Your Network in Minutes
WhatsUp Gold features powerful Layer 2/3 discovery which can be initiated from an IP Range Scan or SNMP Smart Scan of a core router’s Bridge Table and generates a detailed map of the core, Windows, wireless and virtual infrastructures and more. The discovery process also generates a complete inventory of all networked devices including device type, vendor, serial number, firmware and hardware rev, and the modules installed on the devices. Customers often use this feature to fulfill inventory audits with automatically generated reports on the software installed on servers or network devices or to receive alerts when devices are coming off warranty. At the completion of the discovery process, WhatsUp Gold automatically assigns devices roles that specify what data to collect and remedial actions that are enabled. You can easily modify default device roles and sub-roles or create new ones with the Device Role Editor. The discovery process also identifies dependencies that are marked on the map as directional arrows. With a couple of mouse clicks, dependency data can be used to suppress unnecessary alerts saving valuable troubleshooting time by minimizing false alerts.
