Advanced State Monitoring

Action Policies and Alerting

When a monitored component or application changes its state, you can create multi-step Action Policies. Action Policies can include issuing alerts via text or email, capturing events to a log file, or self-healing actions such as re-starting  an application service or initiating a PowerShell script. For example, when an application goes into a down state, you can specify an action path that immediately writes a log entry, kicks off an action script to reboot the system five minutes later, and sends an email notification ten minutes after that. You can define attributes to easily keep track of important configuration and settings information about your applications and systems. Take advantage of powerful percent variables in your action policies and component configurations, such as passing key information about your applications in email alert notification. You can also define blackout policies for alerts and actions. For example, you can create an application specific blackout policy that suspends alerting on weekdays between 9 PM and 6 AM.

What Protocols Does WhatsUp Gold Support?

The Network Traffic Analysis module collects network traffic and bandwidth usage data from any flow-enabled device on the network. It supports Cisco’s NetFlow and NetFlow-Lite as well as  NSEL protocols, J-Flow,  sFlow and IPFIX.  Collect and view data for Cisco CBQoS (Class Based Quality of Service) and NBAR (Network Based Application Recognition).

WhatsUp Gold’s Configuration Management module automates configuration and change management for the routers, switches and firewalls on your network. It archives and audits network configurations, and alerts and reports on any changes. It enables network admins to ensure that all devices are running authorized configurations, to secure the network and comply with regulatory standards, and to reduce the time and costs associated with manual and repetitive configuration and change management tasks.


Archive and Restore Network Configurations

WhatsUp Golds Configuration Management feature provides central archiving of network configurations in a secure encrypted repository. Network admins can store multiple configurations for each device, including start-up and running configurations. New devices added to the network, can be simply deployed with a  download of an archived configuration. If there is a problem, the device can be restored to a known good configuration, minimizing downtime. In both cases, this saves considerable time versus building configurations from scratch. WhatsUp Gold supports bulk configuration changes for multiple devices. For example, many IT organizations mandate monthly password changes to secure their network. A bulk change feature automates this process, rather than changing passwords one device at a time. Bulk changes and other tasks can be scheduled to run automatically.


Alert on Configuration Changes

Network admins need to account for every network configuration change, approved or not. Configuration Management alerts on any changes it detects each time it scans its configuration database. Scans can be scheduled to run automatically to shorten the window between when a change is made and when an alert is issued. In addition, WhatsUp Gold can also alert on configuration changes using SNMP traps. Alerts are integrated into the Alert Center.

Configuration Management can be scheduled to run regular audits on network devices to prove compliance with archived configurations. Most organizations also contend with regulatory standards like SOX, PCI, HIPAA and FISMA. They are subject to annual audits which can be costly and disruptive to IT operations. It automates the management of configuration compliance for these regulatory mandates with out-of-the-box configuration templates. Monitor VMware and Hyper-V in real-time to keep an up-to-date list of all hosts and attributes. Monitor the performance and resource consumption of hosts and guests, including CPU, Memory, Disk and Interface Utilization and the availability and performance of servers and tracks live migrations. While Virtualization Monitoring is automatically set to poll every minute, system admins can customize their polling cycles to meet their specific needs. An event log provides a record of events generated from virtual devices.


Alert on Your Virtual Infrastructure

Generate threshold-based alerts on CPU, memory, disk and interface utilization on virtual machines and events including virtual machine status,  security related events and any alert generating an event log.   • Virtual Hosts (all hosts discovered on the network)

WhatsUp Gold automatically discovers, maps and monitors cloud environments including Amazon Web Services and Azure servers. You can monitor availability of these resources based on an algorithm that factors in multiple characteristics including load balancers, virtual servers and environments, and ping (among others). This extends WhatsUp Gold’s proven network monitoring functionality to the hybrid cloud and beyond the premises to ensure consistent traffic across all systems.


More Visibility to Remote Networks

The Distributed monitoring feature extends the capabilities of WhatsUp Gold to multiple remote networks, allowing a central installation and one or more remote installations. A single instance of WhatsUp Gold is determined to be either the central site or a remote site in a distributed environment based solely on the license used during installation. The central site installation coordinates data feeds from remote site installations and the network data collected from remote sites can be viewed in WhatsUp Gold reports on the central site. Together, the central and remote installations provide high visibility to multiple networks from one location.

The Central WhatsUp Gold server and each additional Remote server require their own WhatsUp Gold license. At installation, each server must be configured as either Central or Remote (although this can be changed any time) thus creating a distributed network. Note that while WhatsUp Gold provides a common platform for monitoring this distributed network, the Central and Remote servers need not be running the same edition or license point tier. Therefore, it is possible to create a distributed network consisting of a Central server running a 500-point Total Plus license, a remote server running a 300-point Total license and another remote server running a 100-point Pro license. Note that points cannot be shared across servers.


Reduce Network Monitoring Downtime

Automatically switch WhatsUp Gold from a primary installation to a standby system when the primary system is not functioning normally. The WhatsUp Gold Failover Manager reduces costly downtime by automatically taking action in the event of a primary system failure. This capability can also be initiated by a network administrator manually for planned outages/maintenance.

The Failover Manager utilizes user-configurable criteria to determine a failed state. You can choose to have the primary system go down if all services are disabled, or if any specified service is disabled. For example, if you select all services, the services used by WhatsUp Gold must go down on the primary service for the secondary system to take over. If you select only the Polling Engine and Web Server, and both are disabled on the primary system for any reason, the secondary system takes over WhatsUp Gold network management duties until the primary system is restored.


Discover, Map and Monitor Your Network in Minutes

WhatsUp Gold features powerful Layer 2/3 discovery which can be initiated from an IP Range Scan or SNMP Smart Scan of a core router’s Bridge Table and generates a detailed map of the core, Windows, wireless and virtual infrastructures and more. The discovery process also generates a complete inventory of all networked devices including device type, vendor, serial number, firmware and hardware rev, and the modules installed on the devices. Customers often use this feature to fulfill inventory audits with automatically generated reports on the software installed on servers or network devices or to receive alerts when devices are coming off warranty. At the completion of the discovery process, WhatsUp Gold automatically assigns devices roles that specify what data to collect and remedial actions that are enabled. You can easily modify default device roles and sub-roles or create new ones with the Device Role Editor. The discovery process also identifies dependencies that are marked on the map as directional arrows. With a couple of mouse clicks, dependency data can be used to suppress unnecessary alerts saving valuable troubleshooting time by minimizing false alerts.
